Suitability

Best Applications (Highly Suitable)

A permanent magnet lifter works best when handling:

1. Ferrous Materials Only
Mild steel plates
Steel blocks
Round bars or pipes (with V-groove lifters)

It only works on magnetic materials (iron/steel).

2. Flat, Clean, Smooth Surfaces
Maximum lifting capacity is achieved when:
Surface is flat
Material is clean (no rust, oil, paint, or scale)
3. Consistent Production Environments
Ideal for:
Machine shops
Fabrication workshops
Warehouses handling steel stock

Great for repetitive lifting where speed matters.

4. Situations Requiring No Power Source
No electricity or batteries required
Perfect for:
Remote areas
Load shedding environments (relevant locally)
⚠️ Limitations (Where Suitability Drops)
1. Non-Magnetic Materials
Not suitable for:
Aluminum
Stainless steel (non-magnetic grades)
Copper, brass, etc.
2. Thin Materials
Lifting force reduces significantly with thin steel
Example:
A lifter rated for 500 kg may only safely lift ~150–250 kg on thin plate
3. Rough or Uneven Surfaces
Rust, scale, or gaps reduce magnetic contact
Can lead to:
Reduced capacity
Unsafe lifting conditions
4. Temperature Sensitivity
Most PMLs operate safely up to ±80°C
High temperatures reduce magnetic strength permanently
5. No Fail-Safe Like Electromagnets
If incorrectly engaged or surface conditions are poor, load can drop
Requires:
Proper operator training
Safety factors (usually 3:1)
